At the end of the 19th century, black musicians in the United States created a new musical form called jazz. It was influenced by many different types of music - African chants and rhythms, religious hymns, and popular ballads of British origin - but it evolved its own separate musical identity. Jazz began in the city of New Orleans, and then slowly but steadily spread across the United States.
